Police sergeant killed after being dragged under vehicle in Lagos
A police officer died after being struck and dragged beneath a vehicle during a stop-and-search operation in Egbeda, Lagos State, on September 26. The incident occurred around 2:20 p.m. along Olugbede Street, as officers attempted to flag down a Lexus ES 350 with the registration number FKJ 223 KX.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police Tijani Fatai provided details during a press briefing on the command’s achievements in September. According to Fatai, the driver, identified as 21-year-old Olumide Olusola, initially stopped the vehicle but accelerated as Sergeant Johnson Okediji approached the driver’s side.
Despite attempts by fellow officers and witnesses to stop the vehicle, Okediji was knocked down and dragged several meters. The driver was subsequently pursued and arrested. The injured officer was first taken to a nearby hospital before being transferred to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).
Tragically, Sergeant Okediji, who sustained multiple fractures and severe head injuries, was pronounced dead upon arrival at LASUTH. His body has been sent to the Mainland Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The Lexus ES 350 has been recovered and is currently in police custody.
