Five Arrested in Maiduguri for Political Dissent
MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — Five men were arrested in the Borno State capital on Tuesday for wearing T-shirts that read “Tinubu Must Go,” a slogan indicating political dissent.
Amnesty International confirmed the names of the arrested individuals: Baba Aji Gremami, Mustapha Abba Yemen, Abacha Mohammed Ali, Adam Umar Gubio, and Abdulhamid Mohammed.
In a statement, Amnesty International condemned the arrests, asserting that wearing a T-shirt with a political message should not be considered a crime. The organization highlighted that expressing political opposition is a fundamental human right.
Amnesty called for the unconditional release of the detained men and urged authorities to refrain from pursuing any charges that could lead to a trial deemed unjust.
“The right to express political opinion should not be limited to any single political party,” the statement emphasized.
The rights organization also accused the Borno State Government and local police of engaging in a pattern of repressive arrests targeting opposition parties and their supporters. It asserted that the current administration is using the law to stifle peaceful dissent and silence opposition voices.
Amnesty International urged Governor Babagana Zulum to respect the rights to freedom of expression and association, insisting that state power should not be employed against political adversaries.
