Lagos: LAWMA clears illegal traders from TBS, National Theatre axis
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has intensified its efforts to combat illegal street trading in conjunction with the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI). Recent operations focused on clearing traders from unauthorized areas, including road corridors, in various locations across Lagos.
Areas impacted by the enforcement included Tafawa Balewa Square and the Costain Under Bridge/National Theatre region. LAWMA cited concerns that the presence of traders in these spots was obstructing both pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director and CEO of LAWMA, explained on Tuesday that the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to safeguard public spaces, enhance environmental conditions, and ensure that roadways and walkways fulfill their intended purposes.
“This unauthorized occupation of pedestrian pathways and road corridors not only hinders the proper use of public areas, but it also contributes to environmental issues in those locations,” Gbadegesin stated.
He urged traders to refrain from returning to the cleared areas and to operate only from designated trading locations. Maintaining order in public spaces, he noted, relies on sustained compliance with environmental regulations and active enforcement by relevant agencies.
“LAWMA is committed to collaborating with other governmental bodies to address activities that compromise environmental standards and public order,” he added.
The recent enforcement action is part of LAWMA’s broader initiative to maintain cleaner and more accessible corridors in Lagos, particularly in zones prone to heavy foot and vehicle traffic.
Gbadegesin appealed to residents and stakeholders to support enforcement efforts by adhering to established regulations and avoiding actions that obstruct public spaces or lead to environmental degradation.
To prevent traders from returning to cleared areas, LAWMA plans to maintain ongoing surveillance and ensure compliance in the affected locations. This initiative is a step in LAWMA’s larger commitment to uphold environmental standards and protect public spaces throughout Lagos.
