Gov. Yusuf Warns New Health Workers Against Patient Abuse, Illegal Charges

KANO, Nigeria — Kano State Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf issued a stern warning to newly recruited health workers on Wednesday, urging them not to mistreat patients or demand illegal payments for medical services at public health facilities. The statement came during the official launch and presentation of appointment letters to 2,037 new healthcare personnel.

According to a statement released by Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the Director General of Media and Publicity for the Government House in Kano, the newly appointed personnel include 250 medical doctors, 40 pharmacists, 250 nurses, 250 midwives, 150 community health officers, 50 junior community health extension workers, and 50 medical laboratory scientists.

Governor Yusuf emphasized that this recruitment drive is part of efforts to address the manpower shortages plaguing healthcare facilities in the state. He noted that the situation has been exacerbated by the exodus of healthcare professionals seeking better opportunities elsewhere.

In his address, Yusuf called on the new recruits to fulfill their roles with “compassion, integrity, discipline, and professionalism.” He reminded them to uphold the rights and dignity of all patients, irrespective of their social status, religion, ethnicity, or political affiliation.

Furthermore, the governor insisted that no patient should be deferred treatment or made to endure hardship due to their financial situation. He underscored that the appointments should be seen as a commitment to serving the people of Kano State and enhancing the overall quality of healthcare delivery in the region.
