‘Those who organise violence will face the law’ — Kefas

Governor Agbu Kefas Addresses Kaduna’s Safety and Welfare in Independence Day Broadcast
Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas has reiterated his administration’s dedication to the safety and well-being of residents. In a statewide address on Thursday, coinciding with Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, he warned that those who orchestrate violence, fund criminal activities, or manipulate community divisions to incite unrest will face legal consequences.
Kefas announced that he would exercise the prerogative of mercy, granting clemency to 24 inmates whose cases were reviewed. This decision, he noted, was made in accordance with Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, and followed consultations with the Taraba State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.
“The decision was guided by the law, the interests of justice, evidence of rehabilitation, and humanitarian considerations,” Kefas stated. He urged the beneficiaries of this clemency to act responsibly, abide by the law, and contribute positively to their communities and families.
Addressing the state’s financial situation, the governor revealed that his administration inherited significant debts and financial obligations, all of which it continues to manage alongside salaries, pensions, public services, and ongoing development projects.
Kefas acknowledged that the government has accessed legitimate financing options when necessary, but emphasized that such financing must be affordable, transparent, and utilized effectively. He instructed relevant financial authorities to compile a comprehensive and transparent report on the state’s verified debt status, inherited obligations, and financial management of projects.
“My administration will continue to reduce existing obligations, increase internally generated revenue, and expand the productive economy without imposing excessive taxes on low-income residents,” he assured.
On electricity development, Kefas congratulated President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Government for Nigeria’s success in international arbitration regarding the Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project. He expressed Taraba’s readiness to work alongside the federal government on the project while ensuring the protection of host communities and the environment.
The governor directed the Taraba State Electricity Commission, along with other relevant institutions, to explore opportunities for small-scale and medium-scale hydropower, solar energy, and additional electricity generation projects throughout the state.
