IGP deploys DIG to rescue 20 corps members, others

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has dispatched Deputy Inspector-General of Police for Operations, Shehu Nadada, to Imo State to lead the search and rescue operation for 20 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and other passengers abducted along the Owerri-Onitsha Road.

The abduction reportedly took place on Thursday, October 1, 2026, in the Umunoha area of Imo State.

Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, announced Nadada’s deployment in a statement released on Friday. Upon his arrival, Nadada, accompanied by two Commissioners of Police, immediately assessed the situation at the scene and the ongoing rescue efforts.

During the assessment, Nadada reviewed operational strategies, personnel deployment, and available resources before issuing directives to enhance the coordinated response.

This assessment included collaboration with Imo State Commissioner of Police Audu Garba Bosso, Commissioner of Police for Federal Operations Akpan Anifiok, and other key service commanders within the Imo State Police Command.

Iniedu stated that the police have intensified their search efforts by deploying additional tactical teams and operational resources to identified areas. The operation is being bolstered through intelligence-led initiatives aimed at tracking the abductors, as well as coordinated efforts with other security agencies.

Nadada emphasized the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to securing the safe return of the abducted individuals. He reassured the public that the police would continue the operation until it is successfully concluded.

He urged the public and media to remain calm and vigilant, encouraging anyone with credible information that could aid the rescue efforts to contact the police or local security agencies. Nadada added that all shared information would be treated with confidentiality.

Authorities will provide further updates on the rescue operation as developments occur.
