Two killed as gunmen attack another mining site in Plateau

Two miners were shot and killed Friday night by assailants believed to be members of Fulani militias at a mining site in Kuru Jenta, located in the Heipang District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area in Plateau State.

Rwang Tengwong, the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), confirmed the attack in a statement provided to the media on Saturday. He stated that the shooting occurred around 11:30 p.m. while the victims and other miners were working at the site.

Tengwong condemned the attack as unprovoked and regrettable, noting that it came just a week after another incident in which two miners were killed at a different mining site in Rakum village, Jos South Local Government Area.

He called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation, identify those responsible, and ensure their prosecution.

In light of the recent violence, Tengwong urged residents, especially miners, to refrain from night mining and to remain vigilant by adhering to security measures implemented by the government. He emphasized that the attack coincided with a state-imposed curfew in three local government areas, including Barkin Ladi.

The BYM spokesman encouraged residents to respect the curfew, maintain vigilance, and take precautions to minimize their exposure to security threats amid the current situation in the area.
