LAUTECH Strike: Alli Campaign Organisation Faults Makinde Over Doctors’ Welfare –

Senator Sharafadeen Alli Campaign Organization Criticizes Oyo Governor Over Doctors’ Strike

The Senator Sharafadeen Alli Campaign Organization (SSACO) has criticized Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for the ongoing strike by resident doctors at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso. The strike, which has persisted for over 30 days, has raised concerns about the government’s management of healthcare worker welfare and working conditions.

In a statement issued Sunday, Bisi Oladele, Director of Media and Publicity for SSACO, expressed dismay over the situation. The organization pointed out that the recent 21-day warning strike announced by the Association of Medical and Dental Officers of Oyo State (AMDO) highlights unresolved issues surrounding welfare, remuneration, and working conditions for medical personnel.

SSACO noted that the strike stems from ongoing disputes over payment of allowances, residency training funds, and salary arrears. Specifically, resident doctors have called for the payment of outstanding Medical Residency Training Funds and six months of Minimum Wage arrears, among other entitlements.

The organization warned that the extended strike is adversely affecting healthcare delivery, forcing patients who rely on public hospitals for affordable and specialized care to seek alternatives in private facilities or face significant delays.

“It is concerning that Governor Seyi Makinde has not engaged with the striking resident doctors to reach an amicable resolution,” the statement read. “As the strike drags on, the resident doctors feel neglected while the public suffers the consequences of the government’s inaction.”

SSACO emphasized the critical importance of healthcare services, which it argues should be treated with urgency and importance by responsible administrations. The organization cautioned that the situation could escalate if medical and dental officers across the state follow through on their threat of industrial action.

“The notification of a warning strike from medical and dental officers in state hospitals signifies a failure within the health sector that is unacceptable,” SSACO stated.

As part of its campaign agenda, SSACO vowed to prioritize healthcare under Senator Sharafadeen Alli’s Oyo AHEAD initiative. The organization promised enhanced welfare, training, and working conditions for health workers, asserting that no health worker or civil servant should be denied their entitlements.

SSACO also called on the Makinde administration to clarify its approach to addressing the grievances of medical personnel, warning that further disruptions in healthcare services could have dire repercussions for patients dependent on public hospitals throughout Oyo State.
