Nigerian Army Repels ISWAP Attack in Borno

KUKAWA, Nigeria—Troops from the Nigerian Army’s 101 Special Forces Battalion successfully repelled a significant attack by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on their military base in Kukawa, Borno State, on Tuesday night.

The assault began between 9:00 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., when the terrorists launched a coordinated attack from four directions. Security sources, including counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama, reported that the troops engaged the attackers in a prolonged gun battle, which was supported by the Air Component.

Over 25 ISWAP militants were reportedly neutralized during the confrontation. Troops recovered 14 bodies from the battlefield and a cache of weapons left behind by the fleeing attackers, which included six AK-47 rifles.

However, the military also faced casualties, with reports indicating that several soldiers were killed and others injured during the operation.

In the aftermath of the attack, the Brigade Commander visited the scene to oversee the repositioning of troops and to ensure the replenishment of personnel and equipment, as well as further assessments of the battlefield.

This engagement forms part of the ongoing efforts by the Nigerian military to prevent terrorist groups from consolidating their presence in Kukawa and throughout the Lake Chad region. Additional details regarding casualties and recovered weapons are anticipated as the military concludes its investigation into the incident.
