After protests, FG bows to pressure, releases SSANU 8 months salary arrears

The Federal Government has released eight months of salary arrears for the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU). This action comes just two days after SSANU issued a 14-day ultimatum for the government to implement the 2026 FGN/SSANU Agreement.

In response to the government’s decision, SSANU expressed appreciation for the swift intervention, highlighting the commitment of Minister of Education Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa to uphold agreements with university-based unions.

According to a statement from SSANU, the association had previously demanded the quick release of funds and full payment of outstanding arrears related to the Consolidated University Teaching and Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTTA), which are calculated from January 1, 2026.

SSANU also warned that if the government did not comply with their demands within the specified timeframe, the association would be compelled to initiate a “total, comprehensive and indefinite strike action” without further notice.

To avert potential disruptions in academic activities across Nigerian universities, the government authorized the release of the funds within 48 hours of the ultimatum.

SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim confirmed the release of the arrears, stating that this outcome illustrates how constructive engagement combined with prompt action can foster industrial harmony and ensure the welfare of workers.
