Suspected Fulani militias kill former BYM District chairman

Gunmen Kill Former Youth Association Leader in Plateau State

Barkin Ladi, Plateau State – The Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) has reported the killing of Rwas Paul Danladi, a former chairman of the organization for the Gashish District, by armed assailants believed to be associated with Fulani militias.

Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, the National President of BYM, confirmed the incident in a statement issued Thursday morning. He stated that Danladi was attacked on Wednesday evening while riding a motorcycle along the Gashish-Barkin Ladi Road, specifically near Rantis Village, just a few miles from his home.

“The attack occurred at approximately 5:30 p.m. as Danladi was returning to Barkin Ladi,” Mwantiri said.

The youth association expressed deep sadness over the loss of Danladi, a respected community leader, and extended condolences to his family, friends, and the Gashish community.

In addition to mourning Danladi, BYM condemned a purported misinformation campaign on social media that followed the attack. Mwantiri criticized a post by Iliyasu Ibrahim Shagari, which claimed that two Fulani individuals had been killed by alleged Berom militias. According to the BYM, it was actually Fulani militias responsible for the recent attack.

Mwantiri expressed concern regarding the spread of false narratives and called for an investigation by security agencies into Shagari’s social media activities. He highlighted that the timing and content of the post warranted scrutiny, especially since it was shared widely within various groups.

BYM has urged the Department of State Services (DSS) to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into Shagari’s claims to ascertain the source of the misinformation and determine if it was intended to incite further tensions in the region.

“The incident underscores the troubling role of social media in disseminating misinformation during violent conflicts,” Mwantiri remarked. He called for security agencies to not only address acts of physical violence but also to investigate coordinated efforts to manipulate public perceptions surrounding such attacks.
