Three Children Drown in Abandoned Fish Pond in Delta State
AGBARHA-OTOR, Delta State — Three children from the same family drowned in an abandoned fish pond on Saturday, October 10, 2026, prompting deep sorrow within their community.
The victims, identified as Great Anthony Ikpera, 6; Goodluck Anthony Ikpera, 8; and Vwegba Jite Ikpera, 12, were members of the Ikpera family residing in the Awirhe Community of Agbarha-Otor, located in the Ughelli North Local Government Area.
The tragic incident unfolded when the children were reported missing, leading family members and local residents to initiate a search. Initial efforts yielded no results until the search concluded in tragedy, with their lifeless bodies found floating in the pond near a flowing stream behind the community.
Residents have expressed their grief, with many visiting the bereaved families to offer condolences. “This loss has deeply affected our community,” said Rufus Ovotu, President of the Agbarha Youth Council. “We urge parents and guardians to be more vigilant regarding their children’s activities, especially near water bodies.”
It is believed that the children may have gone to the pond to swim before the incident occurred. Following the discovery of their bodies, the children were laid to rest near the stream.
Ongoing concerns regarding water safety were underscored by community members, as rising water levels present significant risks. Ovotu emphasized the necessity for adult supervision around such areas to prevent further tragedies.
