Election: Wike takes action in private, brags in public – Rufai Oseni

Political Analyst Questions Nigerian Public’s Surprise at Wike’s Remarks

In a recent discussion reflecting on the 2019 Rivers State governorship election, political analyst Oseni expressed skepticism over the public’s astonishment at statements made by former Governor Nyesom Wike. The election, which featured Wike and African Action Congress candidate Biokpomabo Awara, was marred by controversy after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) suspended the process before releasing the final results.

Oseni criticized Wike for what he described as a tendency to boast publicly about his actions while simultaneously operating behind the scenes. He remarked, “Wike will be the one to do it in private, and he will still be the one to come and tell us in public. That’s how he does it.”

He questioned the integrity of political discourse in Nigeria, stating that despite calls for better governance, personal grievances have at times overshadowed the potential for constructive progress. “You keep calling for a better Nigeria… but because you had a grouse with the person that brought the candidate, you were more concerned about destroying that candidate,” he said.

Oseni expressed concern regarding the quality of candidates in Nigerian elections, citing Asie Ighadalo as a capable option who was overlooked due to political rivalries. He characterized Wike as a representation of the dysfunctional electoral system, asserting that his actions reflect widespread issues within Nigerian politics.

Highlighting the discrepancies between reported results and actual events in Rivers State, Oseni remarked, “Look at what happened in Rivers. Look at what was reported on IReV and what INEC reported.” He suggested that the challenges faced by the electoral body stem from systemic problems that undermine the integrity of the election process.

Oseni further commented on the nature of political structures in Nigeria, claiming they often serve to perpetuate criminality rather than facilitate fair elections. He drew attention to Wike’s past actions during the 2019 elections, questioning why Nigerians are surprised by his behavior, which he believes epitomizes the broader issues affecting the country.

In a broader appeal, Oseni urged Nigerians to recognize the implications of their political support, warning that fidelity to corrupt leaders results in servitude to their families and future generations. He concluded with a cautionary note, urging citizens to become more aware of their political realities and the patterns that may continue to affect their future.
