Billionaires fund Nigerian artists – Sarkodie

Ghanaian Rapper Sarkodie Highlights Financial Disparities with Nigerian Artists
Accra, Ghana — Renowned Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has remarked on the significant financial support that Nigerian artists receive from wealthy individuals and corporate executives in Nigeria, a contrast he believes exists compared to his Ghanaian peers.
In a recent episode of the “When We Sit” podcast, Sarkodie discussed the challenges faced by Ghanaian musicians, noting that they often create music independently, without substantial backing from local sponsors. He emphasized that while his work is largely organic, securing funding for projects remains a struggle.
“Nigerian businessmen are more inclined to support and invest in their local talent, giving Nigerian artists a financial edge across Africa,” he said during the interview.
Sarkodie elaborated on the difficulties Ghanaian artists encounter when seeking financial assistance, stating, “Even when I present a business plan, it is hard to find individuals willing to invest. In Nigeria, affluent individuals are more willing to take risks to uplift their artists.” He cited the challenges involved in organizing major events, referencing the complexity and costs associated with concerts such as those at the O2 Arena.
He also recalled a meeting with Nigerian billionaire Tony Elumelu, expressing surprise at the level of investment Elumelu reported he was making in a promising Nigerian artist, whom Sarkodie believes could be influential in the Afrobeats genre going forward.
