NAFDAC Uncovers Suspected Fake Alcoholic Drinks Factory In Abia

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a suspected counterfeit production facility for alcoholic beverages in Aba, Abia State. The agency estimates that the equipment and materials found on-site hold a value exceeding 500 million Naira.
In a statement released on its Instagram account on Monday, October 19, NAFDAC reported that the facility was located at No. 25 Omenazu Street, following credible intelligence. Upon arrival, officials noted that the facility was operating under unsanitary conditions. According to the agency, the alleged operator fled the scene just before the enforcement team arrived.
The agency’s statement detailed that the operator abandoned a vehicle at the site, which contained counterfeit packaging materials for Sir Edwards Scotch Whisky and Scottish Hills Whisky, as well as empty bottles and a drum holding approximately 200 liters of an unknown liquid.
Further searches by NAFDAC officials revealed additional packaging materials, bottle caps, sealing machines, empty bottles, cartons, and tanks filled with various liquid mixtures. Discovery of dirty sieves, suspected to have been used in the production process, along with plastic buckets and 200-liter drums of ethanol, raised significant safety concerns. Additionally, tree bark soaked in ethanol was found at the facility, prompting questions about the products’ safety and quality.
NAFDAC has urged the public to report suspected illegal manufacturing activities through its call center at 0800-1-623322 or 0700-1-623322, or via email.
On October 15, TVC News reported that NAFDAC had seized counterfeiting materials related to alcoholic beverages valued at over 200 million Naira from five shops at the Old Court Road Market in Aba. This operation was conducted following credible intelligence regarding the production and distribution of counterfeit packaging materials.
NAFDAC’s earlier statement noted the seizure included counterfeit labels, corks, and packaging materials for various brands, including Jameson, Glenfiddich, Four Cousins, and Lord’s Dry Gin. The total estimated value of these items was also reported to be over 200 million Naira.
