NATO to send additional patrol planes to Black Sea after drone attacks | Russia-Ukraine war News

NATO Increases Presence in Black Sea Amid Rising Tensions

NATO is enhancing its military presence in the Black Sea following a series of deadly drone attacks in the region, which are widely attributed to Russia, a claim that Moscow has denied.

Colonel Martin O’Donnell, a spokesman for the alliance, stated on Tuesday that NATO members are deploying additional maritime patrol aircraft, radar systems, explosive exploitation teams, intelligence personnel, and drones to the area. “Allies have or will send additional resources to the Black Sea,” he said. O’Donnell emphasized the vital need to bolster situational awareness through improved sensors and data sharing.

While NATO, alongside Bulgaria and Romania, has not specifically blamed any country for the recent attacks, military analysts suggest that Russia is likely responsible. In a notable incident on October 5, Romania reported that two individuals died when their ship was engulfed in flames and sank in the Black Sea, an event Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attributed to Moscow.

The announcement followed a meeting of NATO’s North Atlantic Council at the alliance’s Brussels headquarters, where security in the Black Sea was a focal point. NATO spokeswoman Allison Hart indicated that the alliance has already fortified its defense along the eastern flank, including enhancing counter-drone capabilities.

European Union Chief Diplomat Kaja Kallas remarked on Tuesday that the occurrence of six attacks within ten days signifies “a dangerous and unacceptable escalation.” She expressed concern that Russia’s actions might aim to undermine Ukraine’s revenue from grain exports.

The escalating attacks threaten to exacerbate global food supply issues, already strained by droughts in various regions and conflicts in the Middle East. Last week, seven sailors were reported missing after drones struck two chemical tankers off Romania’s Black Sea coast, igniting serious security concerns in a crucial shipping lane for Ukraine.

Over the past ten days, at least five other cargo vessels have been attacked near the coasts of Romania and neighboring NATO member Bulgaria, resulting in at least 23 sailors reported missing or dead.
