Katsina hunters eliminate 14 bandits, foil mass kidnap

Community Hunters Kill 14 Bandits in Katsina State Clash

KATSINA, Nigeria — Community hunters in Katsina State engaged in a gun battle that resulted in the deaths of 14 bandits and thwarted a potential mass kidnapping, state officials reported.

Dr. Nasir Danmusa, the state’s Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, issued a statement detailing the incident. He stated that intelligence gathered on Friday revealed plans by 26 heavily armed bandits, led by a notorious figure known as Isiya Kwashen Garwa, to attack neighboring communities from their base in Dawan Laila Forest.

In response to the intelligence, security agencies heightened their awareness in Bakori Local Government Area to prevent the planned abduction.

At approximately 1:31 p.m. on the same day, the armed bandits attacked a civilian vehicle transporting four passengers from Kakumi Ward to Illela Market in Sokoto State. During the assault, the bandits set the vehicle on fire, trapping its occupants.

Community hunters from Gidan Wawo were rapidly mobilized and confronted the fleeing assailants, resulting in a fierce gunfight. The interaction concluded with the deaths of 14 bandits and the rescue of three individuals.

Despite these successes, the operation came at a cost. Mohammed Ibrahim Jidda, a community hunter, was killed in the confrontation. Another hunter, 25-year-old Usman Sunday, suffered minor injuries and is currently receiving medical care. Tragically, one of the vehicle’s passengers, Jamilu Lawal, died from burns sustained during the attack.

The state government indicated that there are concerns regarding potential reprisal attacks from the bandits. Officials assured residents that comprehensive countermeasures, in collaboration with security agencies, have been implemented to mitigate further threats.
