2027: Obi not a threat in Lagos; we’ve corrected 2023 mistakes — APC

APC Leaders in Lagos Downplay Threat Posed by Peter Obi Ahead of 2027 Elections

LAGOS—Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State asserted on Thursday that Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), does not pose a significant threat in the state. They claim that lessons learned from the 2023 elections have positioned the party to reclaim its standing.

The remarks were made during a press briefing at the launch of the Iyaloja General Movement (IGM), established by Dr. Mujidat Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, daughter of President Bola Tinubu and Iyaloja General of Nigeria, in Abuja. The movement aims to galvanize support for the president’s re-election bid in the January 16, 2027 presidential election.

Barrister Adejumbo Omofumilewa, the Lagos State Director-General of IGM, stated that the inauguration served as a rally in favor of President Tinubu ahead of the upcoming elections. He emphasized that the APC is prepared to improve upon its previous performance in Lagos, where it suffered a setback during the last presidential election due to insufficient political foresight.

“What happened in 2023 that made our candidate lose the presidential election in Lagos State has already been dealt with. Now, everybody is following him,” Omofumilewa said. He expressed confidence that the opposition parties, including Obi’s NDC, would not significantly challenge the APC’s dominance in the state.

“The APC is in command here,” he added, asserting that the party is strategically positioned to secure victory in the upcoming elections.

Dr. Nasiru Ladan, Director-General of the IGM, reported that the movement has already garnered support from over 2,500 groups, with more organizations expressing interest. He mentioned that these groups are being integrated into the movement’s structure and a database of supporters is being developed across various localities.

“We are just getting started; the machinery is in motion in all the states and local governments,” Ladan said, outlining the grassroots strategy aimed at converting organizational efforts into electoral success.

The movement plans to deploy ten facilitators to each polling unit, with each tasked with mobilizing 100 voters, aiming for a target of 10 million votes in the next election.

Cornelius Oyefolu Ojelabi, Lagos State Chairman of the APC, emphasized the party’s commitment to the upcoming elections, stating that it is leaving nothing to chance. He noted the various political activities surrounding the APC and reiterated the importance of outreach to the electorate.

“The All Progressives Congress is actively engaging voters and highlighting what this administration has accomplished over the last four years,” Ojelabi stated, acknowledging the need for vigilance and proactive measures as the party prepares for 2027.

In a related note, Prince Mendy Achibong, Akwa Ibom State Coordinator of the IGM, remarked on the movement’s progress in his state, assuring that Akwa Ibom will deliver over 80 percent of its votes to President Tinubu in the next election, an improvement over the last election outcome.
