FRSC targets motorists using fake, concealed number plates in Bauchi

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched an enforcement initiative targeting motorists with improper vehicle registration numbers in Bauchi State, emphasizing that violators will face strict penalties.
The five-day campaign, named Operation Guduma (Hammer), focuses on vehicles with fake, missing, faded, or unauthorized diplomatic license plates. This initiative is part of a broader national security strategy directed by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) aimed at ensuring vehicles can be accurately traced through their registration details and ownership records.
Chorrie Muta’a, the Corps Commander leading the operation, expressed concern over the misuse of government-issued registration numbers by private vehicle owners. He noted that some individuals, including government officials, have been known to transfer official number plates to their personal cars in an attempt to evade identification during traffic violations.
Muta’a further stated that hiding registration numbers, particularly on vehicles equipped with tinted windows, poses challenges for security agencies investigating hit-and-run incidents and other crimes. He emphasized the importance of proper vehicle identification by likening driving without valid registration to having a nameless child: “Every vehicle must have a recognized identity.”
The enforcement team plans to extend its operations beyond Bauchi metropolis to include all 20 local government areas in the state. Muta’a indicated that the FRSC has conducted similar operations in various regions of the country and is committed to ensuring compliance in Bauchi.
Motorists are urged to regularize their vehicle documentation and cooperate with enforcement officers during this operation, which began on Monday and is scheduled to conclude on Friday.
