Police arrest two suspected cable vandals in Abuja

FCT Police Arrest Two for Vandalism, Recover Stolen Cables

Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police have apprehended two individuals suspected of vandalizing public and private infrastructure in Abuja, recovering several pieces of stolen armoured cable in the process.

The suspects, identified as Sagir Abubakar from Kuchigoro Village and Seidu Umar Bello, were taken into custody during a police patrol in the Guzape area early Monday morning. Police Public Relations Officer Josephine Adeh reported that the incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on October 31, 2026, when officers patrolling Walter Ofonagoro Street noticed a Lexus SUV and a Toyota Sienna parked under suspicious circumstances.

As officers approached the vehicles to inquire about the occupants’ presence in the area at that hour, the suspects fled the scene. According to Adeh, one suspect abandoned the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot but was apprehended by officers.

Subsequent searches of the area uncovered multiple pieces of cut armoured cables, leading to preliminary findings that Abubakar is part of a vandalism gang that specifically targets secluded locations within the FCT.

Further investigation yielded the arrest of Bello, who had initially evaded capture in one of the vehicles. The police are continuing their efforts to identify additional gang members and assess the full scope of their activities.

The suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to face charges once investigations are complete. The command has urged residents to report any suspicious persons or activities to their nearest police station.
