African Union Chairperson Condemns Violence in Zamfara State
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has condemned the recent surge of violence in Zamfara State, Nigeria, and called for enhanced collaborative efforts to prevent further bloodshed.
In a message posted Sunday night on the African Union’s official X account, Youssouf characterized the February 21 attack in northwestern Nigeria as a “heinous and well-coordinated terrorist assault.” Reports indicate that the violence resulted in the deaths of more than 50 civilians, with several women and children reportedly taken hostage.
The African Union affirmed its firm rejection of terrorism and violent extremism in all forms, particularly when directed at innocent civilians. The organization emphasized that targeting vulnerable groups, including women and children, constitutes serious human rights violations and poses significant threats to peace and stability.
“The African Union unequivocally rejects all acts of terrorism and violent extremism against civilian populations, particularly women and children, as grave violations of human rights and serious threats to peace, security, and stability,” Youssouf stated.
Expressing solidarity with Nigeria, Youssouf extended condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and offered wishes for a swift recovery to the injured. He reiterated the African Union’s commitment to support Nigeria in its efforts to address insecurity and foster lasting peace in affected communities.
Youssouf called for the immediate, safe, and unconditional release of all women and children who have been abducted, urging those responsible to ensure their safety upon release. He highlighted the necessity for stronger cooperation and coordinated strategies to protect civilians and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The statement underscored the African Union’s ongoing dedication to promoting peace, security, and stability across the continent.
