Kannywood Actor Umar Ascon Passes Away at 48
Kano, Nigeria — Umar Ascon, a prominent Kannywood actor best known for his role as Alhaji Lado Mai Barkono in the long-running television series “Garwashi,” died on Saturday, March 14, 2026. He was 48 years old.
Ascon passed away at Malam Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital after a prolonged illness. The news was confirmed by fellow Kannywood producer and neighbor Abubakar Yahaya Matinko.
He is survived by his pregnant wife and two daughters.
Before his career in film, Ascon was a businessman based at Hotoro Depot in Kano. He rose to fame within the Kannywood industry through his portrayal in “Garwashi,” along with appearances in other notable Hausa films such as “Wata Shida” and “Manyan Mata.”
His funeral prayer took place at Al-Masjlisul Islami Mosque, near Gade-Gade Filling Station, where he was laid to rest according to Islamic traditions.
