Abia Govt demolishes shops, shanties in Railway Quarters

The Abia State Government has carried out the demolition of shops and shanties along the right flank of the Nigerian Railways Quarters in Umuahia to facilitate an ongoing road construction project.

The Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) has defended the demolitions, stating that the occupants were provided with adequate notice prior to the action taken by construction crews.

According to a design plan and a Memorandum of Understanding between the Abia State Government and the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), the new road will extend from the First Bank junction on Market Road through the Railways Quarters, ultimately connecting to Akanu Ibiam Road.

Officials from the Abia State Government have indicated that the road project aims to reduce traffic congestion in Umuahia and enhance the aesthetic appeal of the state capital.

The demolished structures housed various businesses, including electronics dealers and dry cleaners, located near the Government House in Umuahia, as well as residential units occupied by some residents of the Railways Quarters.

A visit to the area on Thursday confirmed that the demolition had been completed by the UCDA. Some affected occupants acknowledged receiving notification from the state government to vacate their premises but expressed concerns about their inability to secure new accommodations before the deadline.
