Abia Govt faces backlash as flood wrecks havoc in community

Abia State Government Responds to Flooding in Owerinta
Abia State, Nigeria – The Abia State government is facing criticism following significant flooding in Owerinta, located in the Isiala Ngwa South local government area. The flooding occurred near an ongoing reconstruction project on Owerinta Road.
On Sunday morning, Okey Kanu, the state’s Commissioner for Information, addressed the situation, stating that it is receiving the government’s attention and that measures will be taken to resolve the issue.
The flooding has been attributed on social media to the alleged poor performance of the government contractor involved in the construction project. In response, Kanu noted that initial assessments suggest that the area has long been affected by natural topographical challenges due to its sloping terrain.
He acknowledged that the ongoing roadwork has exacerbated the flooding issues. “The compound is situated on a downward slope from the main road, which has historically made it vulnerable to water accumulation during heavy rains,” Kanu explained.
He added that residents familiar with the area can confirm that flooding has been a recurring problem, although the current construction has temporarily worsened the conditions.
Kanu emphasized that the state’s commitment to dualizing Owerinta Road aims to enhance safety and improve quality of life for residents. He urged that the incident not be politicized.
