Abia State Government Suspends House of Assembly Clerk Amid Misconduct Allegations
Abia State officials have suspended Mr. John Pedro Irokansi, Clerk of the State House of Assembly, following allegations of misconduct. The decision, communicated in a letter dated May 20, 2026, was signed by Mr. Benson Ojeikere, the Head of Service for Abia State.
In the interim, Mr. Promise Onwukwe, a Deputy Director in the Legislative Department, has been appointed as Acting Clerk, effective immediately.
While specific details regarding the allegations have not been disclosed, the state government has instructed Onwukwe to oversee the administration of the office pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation. He is also tasked with safeguarding all government property and official records handed over to him in accordance with relevant regulations.
Irokansi, who has served as Clerk for approximately 16 years, has held the position throughout three administrations in the state.
