Governor Abiodun Honors Late Lucia Onabanjo at Funeral Mass
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun paid tribute to the late Lucia Onabanjo during her funeral Mass on Friday at St. Sebastian Catholic Cathedral. He characterized her life as a testament to modest service, strong moral principles, and unwavering family support, which significantly contributed to the public life of the state.
Abiodun noted that Mama Onabanjo lived a humble and orderly life, purposely shunning the spotlight while earning respect for her values, faith, and humility. He emphasized that her influence was felt not through political power but rather through the moral lessons she imparted to her family and community.
The governor remarked on the essential role women play in shaping society, citing Onabanjo’s ability to provide moral guidance and exhibit quiet leadership both within her family and in the broader community. “In honor of Mama Lucia Onabanjo, the Iya-Ijo of this church, we will support the completion of this cathedral so it can stand as one of her enduring legacies,” Abiodun stated, assuring church officials of the project’s timely completion.
He reflected on her dedication as a wife and mother, highlighting the values of discipline, faith, and responsibility that she instilled within her home. Abiodun also recalled her steadfast support for her husband, Olabisi Onabanjo, particularly during difficult political periods, including his detention following the 1983 military coup.
Reverend Father Mary Odunsi, in his homily, noted Mama Onabanjo’s significant yet understated contributions to her husband’s administration and the church, describing her as a silent achiever whose legacy would continue to inspire future generations.
The funeral Mass was attended by numerous dignitaries, including former governors, lawmakers, traditional rulers, and prominent political figures from Ogun State and surrounding areas.
