Adamawa govt discharges 51 inmates to decongest prisons

The Adamawa State Jail Delivery Committee successfully facilitated the release of inmates on Wednesday as part of its ongoing efforts to address overcrowding within correctional facilities. The committee’s focus is primarily on individuals serving light sentences and those experiencing health issues.

Meeting at the Yola Old Correctional Centre in the Yola South Local Government Area, the committee also assessed the cases of 39 inmates who have been awaiting trial for extended periods. Led by Adamawa State Chief Judge Justice Hafsat Abdulrahaman, the committee granted bail to 26 detainees and reviewed the sentences of 21 inmates currently serving various prison terms.

During a brief address following the release, Justice Hafsat urged the departing inmates to conduct themselves positively as they reintegrate into their communities. She emphasized that the committee would not extend leniency to individuals who are re-arrested and convicted of new offenses.

The Adamawa State Jail Delivery Committee includes representatives from the Nigerian Bar Association, the Deputy Chief Registrar of the State Area Court, and the Legal Department of the Adamawa State Police Command.
