Adamawa prison decongestion committee frees 55 inmates, bails 51

The Jail Delivery Committee has designated that only minor civil disputes, infractions, and petty theft should be eligible for favorable review, while more serious offenses—such as culpable homicide, rape, and gang-related crimes—are to remain under the jurisdiction of conventional courts.
On Wednesday, the committee, led by Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman, the chief judge of the state, visited the Yolde Pate Correctional Centre located in the Yola South Local Government Area.
Members of the committee include representatives from the Nigerian Bar Association, the Deputy Chief Registrar of the Area Court, the Legal Department of the Adamawa State Police Command, the Director of Public Prosecutions in the Ministry of Justice, and the Controller of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
During the visit, Justice Abdulrahman presented delivery kits to a female inmate who had recently given birth to a baby girl while awaiting trial. The infant was named Hafsat by the grateful family head in honor of the chief judge.
In a related initiative, Justice Abdulrahman also provided transport fare to inmates released from correctional facilities in Bauchi, Yobe, and Gombe states.
