Adhere strictly to safety measures – SEMA warns canoe users in Jigawa
The Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has issued a warning to boat users throughout the state, stressing the importance of adhering to safety protocols, particularly in the face of inclement weather and strong winds.
Hannafi Yakubu, the Executive Secretary of SEMA, made the announcement following a tragic canoe accident in which four girls lost their lives. The incident occurred when a boat carrying eight people capsized in Dudduru Lake, near Kwadige village in the Dutse Local Government Area.
This incident follows another tragedy in Malamawar Yandutse village, also in the Ringim Local Government Area, where ten individuals died in a similar mishap. SEMA has indicated that both accidents were largely attributable to overloading and the use of outdated boats.
“We will not tolerate negligence in safety; we will ensure that all boat users strictly adhere to safety measures to prevent loss of lives and property,” SEMA stated in a release.
Concern over the rising number of canoe accidents prompted remarks from Hon. Danladi Sankara, the State Commissioner for Special Duties and Humanitarian Affairs. He acknowledged the government’s alarm regarding these repeated incidents and indicated that proactive measures are being taken to address the issue.
The government is working to support canoe operators by providing new boats and life jackets to reduce the risk of accidents. In light of the recent casualties, SEMA extended its condolences to the families affected and emphasized the necessity for canoe operators and passengers to prioritize safety, particularly when navigating waterways during hazardous weather conditions.
