AIICO advances maternal health through outreach

AIICO Insurance Partners with HACEY Health Initiative for Maternal Health Outreach in Ikorodu

By Rosemary Iwunze

AIICO Insurance Plc, in collaboration with the HACEY Health Initiative, successfully engaged 1,000 participants during a two-day maternal health outreach held at General Hospital in Ikorodu, Lagos State. The initiative, which took place in September 2026, provided essential health education, screening services, and maternal care supplies tailored to support pregnant women, nursing mothers, and infants.

The outreach effectively integrated maternal health activities into the hospital’s existing antenatal and immunization clinics, delivering preventive care and practical assistance to women already seeking healthcare services.

Screening services offered during the event included blood pressure, blood sugar, and malaria tests, complemented by health education, medical referrals, and the distribution of 650 maternal care kits. Those identified as high-risk due to elevated blood pressure, blood sugar levels, or positive malaria test results were referred to an on-site medical doctor for further evaluation.

The program emphasized improving women’s understanding of pregnancy danger signs, malaria prevention, and the importance of seeking timely medical assistance. By combining screening with education and referrals, the outreach aimed to promote early identification and management of potential health concerns.

The maternal care kits distributed contained essential items such as chlorhexidine gel, sterile gloves, gauze, surgical blades, cord ties, sanitary pads, antiseptics, diapers, wipes, and protective mackintosh. Healthcare workers provided instructions on the proper use of these items to ensure safe delivery, nursing, and newborn care.

Mrs. Abimbola Shobanjo, Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Manager at AIICO Insurance Plc, discussed the initiative’s significance: “Our approach to corporate responsibility focuses on efforts that address genuine needs and create a tangible impact in people’s lives. Maternal health is crucial, as mothers’ well-being directly affects their babies, families, and communities. Through this outreach, we were able to provide health education, screening, timely medical referrals for high-risk cases, and essential supplies that promote safer delivery and newborn care.”

Shobanjo further emphasized that impact extends beyond resource provision. She highlighted the importance of helping individuals recognize potential health risks and make informed decisions regarding their health. The partnership with HACEY and the healthcare professionals at General Hospital facilitated the delivery of these interventions at a critical juncture for the women involved.

Participants shared positive feedback reflecting the outreach’s impact. Balogun Olajumoke, a trader, noted that the health education sessions underscored the importance of self-care during pregnancy. Another participant, Idiat Adebola, a caterer, stressed the necessity of malaria screening, remarking that symptoms might not always be immediately apparent.

Healthcare professionals reinforced the message that mothers should prioritize their health alongside that of their babies, advocating for regular antenatal monitoring and increased awareness of health conditions requiring prompt attention.

The collaboration with HACEY aligns with AIICO’s strategy for corporate social responsibility, focusing on targeted interventions that address community needs and enhance access to crucial health information and services. The project illustrated how coordinated, community-centered initiatives can complement existing healthcare frameworks.

AIICO Insurance Plc is committed to continuing support for initiatives that promote community well-being and deliver practical social impact, furthering its dedication to creating value for individuals, families, and communities.
