Alleged drug trafficking: Why Tinubu’s files have not been released – US agency

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has reaffirmed its position on withholding certain investigative records related to an ongoing inquiry involving Nigerian President Bola Tinubu.

In a court filing dated September 23, 2026, the U.S. government stated that the redacted portions of the documents are essential to safeguarding its sources and investigative techniques.

This case, initiated under the Freedom of Information Act, is being heard in a Washington, D.C., court. It seeks the release of records concerning investigations tied to Tinubu and other individuals. The request was submitted by American activist Aaron Greenspan.

In its latest court filing, the government outlined its rationale for the DEA’s decision not to release specific documents. It described the use of sworn affidavits and a comprehensive index to justify the exemptions cited under U.S. freedom of information laws.

The DEA asserted that its files include various reports generated during its investigations, specifically documents known as DEA-6, DEA-292, and DEA-210. The agency emphasized that information regarding its confidential sources is heavily protected under the Freedom of Information Act.

“Given the substantial protections against the disclosure of such information, the DEA concluded that the importance of concealing these details surpasses the limited public interest in making them available,” the agency stated.
