Ekwulobia Community Postpones New Yam Festival Following Kidnapping Incident
Ekwulobia, a community within the Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, has announced the postponement of its New Yam Festival, originally scheduled for September 4, 2026.
Sources indicate that the decision stems from the abduction of Chief Joseph Ezeokafor, a prominent figure in the community and the owner of Jezco Group of Companies. Ezeokafor, who is also the father of social media personality Jowi Zaza, was reportedly kidnapped on Tuesday evening after he left his residence without security detail.
The incident has cast a pall over the community, leading to widespread mourning and prompting the cancellation of the annual celebration, which typically marks a significant cultural event.
His Royal Majesty Igwe Emmanuel Chukwukadibia Onyeneke, the traditional ruler of Ekwulobia, confirmed the suspension of the New Yam Festival. According to a community source, the Igwe stated, “The community of Ekwulobia cannot celebrate while their son remains in the custody of the kidnappers.”
