Anthropic, the artificial intelligence company known for its chatbot Claude, has announced a net loss exceeding $80 billion for the first half of 2026, a significant increase from a $13 billion loss in the previous year. The Wall Street Journal reported that this surge in losses is primarily attributed to $72 billion in accounting charges linked to changes in the value of convertible notes and other financial instruments used for fundraising.

As the company prepares for its initial public offering (IPO), it indicated plans to invest up to $750 billion in the upcoming years to enhance its computing capacity, which may include ongoing acquisition discussions, according to the Journal. This financial information was derived from a draft prospectus submitted to financial regulators.

The rising costs associated with artificial intelligence technology highlight the challenges facing the sector, as investors scrutinize the viability of substantial investments in chips and data centers. Furthermore, Anthropic has identified several potential risk factors, including the difficulty of preventing its products from being exploited in cyberattacks or through manipulative uses.

Anthropic declined to comment further on its financial situation, and the non-public details in the report could not be independently verified.

Investor Valuations Adjust Amid Financial News

Earlier reports by Reuters indicated that Anthropic experienced a net loss of $42 billion in 2025, as highlighted in its IPO prospectus. Despite its financial challenges, the company has seen increased interest in Claude Code, a coding assistant used by developers to create software and build applications.

However, participants at a recent investor day in San Francisco expressed concerns regarding Anthropic’s valuation in light of the latest financial disclosures. Attendees suggested a revised valuation of around $1.5 trillion, a marked decrease from an estimated $2 trillion valuation initially anticipated for the November share sale.

For the six months ending June 30, Anthropic’s revenue soared to $16.3 billion, up from $1.1 billion during the same period last year. Additionally, expenditures on AI infrastructure experienced significant growth, nearly quadrupling to approximately $9 billion. Recently, Anthropic reported advancements indicating that AI could be on the verge of learning to self-replicate on common home devices.
