Argentina’s Milei backs Trump for US midterms, calls vote crucial for West | Donald Trump News

Milei Encourages Trump to Strengthen Position Ahead of U.S. Midterm Elections

Washington, D.C. — Argentine President Javier Milei has called on U.S. President Donald Trump to emerge stronger from the upcoming midterm elections, emphasizing the significance of the vote for the West as a whole. Milei made his appeal during a Hispanic Heritage gala in Washington on Wednesday, where he was honored by a Hispanic association.

During the event, Milei stated that conservatives “cannot give an inch in our reconquest of the hemisphere,” according to Agence France-Presse (AFP). He stressed the importance of unified conservative efforts in Latin America as part of broader geopolitical considerations.

Milei arrived in the U.S. capital on Wednesday for meetings with investors as well as to attend the gala. He is scheduled to address the U.S. Chamber of Commerce on Thursday.

Trump has previously expressed strong support for Milei, referring to him as his “favorite president.” This endorsement proved beneficial for Milei during his government’s earlier legislative elections. Analysts have suggested that Trump’s backing, along with a currency swap agreement with the U.S. Treasury, played a role in Milei’s electoral success.

The currency swap package, announced by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, involved a $20 billion exchange between the U.S. and Argentina’s central bank, allowing for the exchange of dollars for pesos. This agreement was finalized shortly after Milei’s party faced a setback in a key provincial election.

Trump has made it clear that his support is contingent upon Milei’s continued success at the polls, warning that the United States would not be “generous” if Milei were to lose. These remarks had an immediate impact on Argentine markets, as the main stock index experienced a decline of approximately 2 percent, following a period of gains, according to The Associated Press.

The support garnered by Milei has not been without its critics. In the United States, Democratic lawmakers have accused Trump of prioritizing foreign assistance at a time when the U.S. government was shut down.
