Nigerian Army Establishes New Military Formations in Kebbi State
The Nigerian Army has officially operationalized the 28 Armoured Brigade and Garrison in Birnin Kebbi, alongside the 281 Tank Battalion in Yauri and the 381 Artillery Regiment in Kaoje, all located within Kebbi State.
During a recent ceremony, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, was represented by Maj. Gen. Bemgba Paul Koughna, General Officer Commanding the 8 Division Nigerian Army and Commander of Sector 2, Joint Task Force North-West under Operation FANSAN YAMMA.
Maj. Gen. Koughna emphasized that the establishment of these new formations aims to enhance the Army’s operational capacity, broaden its geographical presence, and improve responses to escalating security threats in the North-West region.
He explained that this initiative is part of broader efforts to optimize the Army’s force structure, strengthen command and control, and minimize response times to security incidents within the division’s jurisdiction.
Furthermore, Koughna tasked the Acting Commander of the 28 Brigade, Col. Abdullahi Umar, with ensuring the formation effectively delivers fire-support capabilities for ongoing operations across the division.
Koughna also encouraged troops to uphold professionalism and adhere strictly to the Rules of Engagement, particularly in the protection of civilians and their property during military operations. He stated that achieving lasting peace requires collaboration among the military, other security agencies, traditional institutions, and local communities.
During his visit, Koughna expressed condolences to the residents of the Jandutse community following a recent bandit attack that resulted in the death of a local resident. He assured the community that the Army would increase its presence in the area to enhance security and deter further attacks.
The establishment of these military formations is intended to bolster the Nigerian Army’s presence in Kebbi State and improve its capacity to conduct sustained operations against banditry and other criminal activities in the North-West.
