Arsenal boss Arteta fires ‘Disneyland’ warning at Dowman after red card | Football

Arteta Addresses Dowman’s Red Card Following Cup Upset

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed disappointment with Max Dowman after the young midfielder received a red card in the Gunners’ unexpected League Cup defeat to Fleetwood Town. The Premier League champions fell to a 5-3 penalty shootout loss after the match ended 1-1 in regular time, marking one of the most disappointing losses in the club’s history.

Dowman was sent off five minutes before the conclusion of normal time for a kick directed at Fleetwood’s Harrison Neal, a decision that some observers deemed harsh. However, Arteta did not hold back in his criticism, reportedly telling the 16-year-old that he was “not in Disneyland” as he left the pitch.

The incident has sparked debate among pundits, with some arguing that Arteta should have shown more understanding towards Dowman, who is now facing a three-game suspension for violent conduct following the failed appeal against the red card.

In a press conference ahead of Arsenal’s match against Liverpool, Arteta defended his reaction. “This is the environment, this is the reality. We are not in Disneyland; we are in the Premier League,” he said.

Arteta has emphasized the importance of accountability, particularly for young players like Dowman, who made his debut at just 15. “We look after him so much but at the same time we’re going to be demanding because he needs to earn the right to play, just like everybody else,” Arteta stated.

He acknowledged the challenge Dowman faces, noting that similar incidents have occurred previously, including one involving the England Under-19s earlier this month. Arteta stressed the need for open communication with the player, balancing protection and expectations.

Despite the recent setback, Arteta assured that his relationship with Dowman remains strong. “There are no issues. We had a talk yesterday. I have done it. It’s not the first time it has happened so we need to put an end to it very, very quickly,” he said.

As Arsenal prepares for a crucial match against Liverpool, they currently sit level on points with league leaders Manchester City.
