A new era is upon Aston Villa, with Unai Emery set to take charge of his first game as manager since joining the club and replacing Steven Gerrard. Emery has joined from Villarreal, and finds Villa languishing just above the drop zone in 16th.
Gerrard was sacked just over two weeks ago, after a 3-0 loss away to Fulham. Aaron Danks took temporary charge of the side for two games afterwards, beating Brentford at home 4-0 in what seemed like an upturn in results. However, they were sent crashing back down to earth with a hammering at the hands of Newcastle, losing 4-0 in the northeast.
Of course, Emery won’t have had a long period of time to work on his system with the squad, but if he can get the best out of Philippe Coutinho, Emi Buendia and strike duo Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings, Villa should be in safe hands for the rest of the season. They face high-flying Manchester United, though, who are unbeaten in their last nine games in all competitions.
Man United have looked a tough nut to crack since losing 6-3 away at Manchester City, winning seven and drawing just twice in the period since. However, despite beating Real Sociedad in the Europa League on Thursday night, it wasn’t enough for them to top the group, meaning they will have to face another two-legged affair against a Champions League side to progress in Europe.
Regardless, Erik ten Hag has got the Red Devils playing some exciting football, with Marcus Rashford most notably on top form. There is of course the drama Cristiano Ronaldo still brings, but Manchester United have admittedly looked a lot better without the Portuguese starting games.
Lisandro Martinez is also part of the reason why Manchester United haven’t conceded a goal from open play since facing Everton at Goodison Park at the start of October – the only goal they’ve seen in their own net since has been a Jorginho penalty against Chelsea.
They will be missing Bruno Fernandes for this clash, though, having picked up his fifth booking of the season last weekend against West Ham. Raphael Varane is still missing through injury, too, while Anthony Martial is struggling for full match fitness.
Villa, meanwhile, are without summer signing Boubacar Kamara and Diego Carlos.
