ASUU calls off four-week strike at Benue varsity
The Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi (FUAM) branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has officially ended its four-week “No Pay, No Work” industrial action. The decision to suspend the strike was announced on Sunday in a statement signed by the branch’s chairperson, Terseer Abari.
Abari noted that the resolution of some key issues during negotiations contributed to the union’s decision. “Consequently, the Congress directed all members of the Branch to resume their official duties with effect from Friday, September 11, 2026,” the statement indicated.
The ASUU chairperson commended union members for their resilience and unity throughout the industrial action, emphasizing that their collective efforts underscored the significance of solidarity in advocating for the rights and welfare of university workers.
He also expressed gratitude toward the university administration for its cooperation during the dispute and reiterated the union’s readiness to engage constructively with management on issues affecting staff welfare and institutional development.
While announcing the suspension of the strike, the union urged its members to return to work with renewed commitment. The FUAM branch reiterated its dedication to the principles and traditions of ASUU, pledging to continue protecting the interests and welfare of its members through collective bargaining.
Abari further extended thanks to students, stakeholders, and members of the public who supported or showed understanding during the strike, which began on August 12, 2026. The action was primarily in response to demands for the full payment of members’ Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and Professorial Allowance.
