Atiku Abubakar Condemns Attack on Peter Obi in Benue State
Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has denounced the violent obstruction of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), in Benue State.
On Tuesday, Obi was reportedly barred from entering Yelwata for a humanitarian outreach event aimed at supporting families affected by ongoing violence in the area.
The Benue State Government, however, refuted claims that it was involved in the actions of the suspected assailants, stating it was unaware of Obi’s planned visit.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo, Abubakar expressed strong condemnation of the incident, labeling it “unacceptable” and “anti-democratic.” He emphasized that Obi had been “brutally prevented” from reaching families in Yelwata to extend his condolences following their experiences with persistent terrorist attacks.
Abubakar called upon the appropriate authorities to conduct an urgent investigation into the occurrence, urging that those responsible be held accountable. He stressed the importance of ensuring that political leaders can perform their duties without fear of intimidation.
