Auburn stunned No. 1 LSU at Plainsman Park on Saturday night, beating the nation’s top-ranked team 8-6 in a contest that lasted nearly four hours.
LSU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but Auburn sent nine batters to the plate in a three-run fourth inning to grab its first lead. Oddly enough, Auburn did so while registering only one hit – a single by Bobby Peirce — as LSU pitchers walked five in the inning. Two of the walks forced runs in, and another run scored on a wild pitch.
Auburn added four more runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh, while holding off repeated LSU rallies to maintain a lead.
Peirce added a key single in the sixth as well and was the only Auburn player to have more than one hit in the game with his two. Bryson Ware added a home run in the seventh for insurance.
Tommy White led LSU with four hits, but National and SEC Player of the Year candidate Dylan Crews was held hitless, going 0-for-4.
Overall, LSU had 12 hits to just seven for Auburn. But Auburn took advantage of seven walks handed out by LSU pitchers.
