BBL game suspended due to ‘genuine threat’ from pitch

The Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Renegades BBL fixture has been abandoned due to the condition of the pitch at GMHBA Stadium in Geelong.

Water came through the covers in the lead-up to the fixture and after 6.5 overs, umpires intervened and halted play.

Inconsistent bounce was a consistent theme throughout the start of the game, with Will Sutherland’s second over the final straw.

A full-length delivery that bounced high was the final ball, with batter Josh Inglis clearly frustrated at the pitch.

“The wicket’s absolutely drenched,” Renegades skipper Nic Maddinson said at the toss after electing to bowl.

Australian legend Adam Gilchrist said “I think there is a genuine threat, personally” when asked by Michael Vaughan on Fox Cricket.

After lashing the “poor covering” at the ground, Vaughan was left “frustrated” over the situation.

“Cricket has this habit of having these type of scenarios. I’m pretty sure they knew it was going to rain all day yesterday, can’t you get extra covers in?” he said.

“I saw it in a Test match in the UK at Old Trafford, I saw it at the SCG when there wasn’t enough covering, with too much time taken out of the game.

“I think we all just think it’s unfortunate, but seriously you can’t get enough covers to cover an area of turf and get more covers in to make sure today’s game goes ahead?

“I just think sometimes in cricket we make too many excuses and for what I should see, that should not happen tonight. That shouldn’t be the case that a game gets abandoned from water getting on the pitch.”

It’s the first time in 555 Big Bash games that play has been abandoned.

Footage captured fans throwing KFC buckets onto the ground when the game was officially cancelled.

Post-game, umpires confirmed points would be split from the match.
