“We get to late July and there is not a deal in front of him that makes him want to stay,” Barrett told Nine’s Footy Classified.

“From what I’ve been told, there is no deal in front of him at all.

“It’s unusual for someone of that standing to be not having a deal in front of him at this stage.”

Silvagni will miss the Blues must-win match against rivals Collingwood on Friday night due to a knee injury, which may complicate the make-up of his new deal, according to Barrett.

“That knee injury … we don’t know whether he’s going to be out for one week or the remainder of the home and away season,” Barrett said.

“It is a complication as he goes through this period about what happens in the future.”

Barrett admitted negotiations on Silvagni’s deal may simply be stalled as Carlton focus on re-signing of young ruckman Tom De Koning, who has been linked with a move to Geelong.

“It may be just manoeuvring … as they try and get De Koning to stay ahead of him. It may be in the queue behind that,” he said.

Essendon champion Matthew Lloyd said it would be disappointing to see Silvagni at a club that isn’t Carlton.

“He’s a Carlton person and I hope he’s still in a Blue jumper next year,” Lloyd told Footy Classified.

“But if another club offers him two years and Carlton are making him wait or are only offering him one, I think he’ll be at another club next year.”
