Bennett confirms star’s scary blood clot setback

Dolphins coach Wayne Bennett has confirmed Origin star Tom Gilbert contracted a potentially serious blood clot after he injured his ACL in the Pre-season Challenge.

Gilbert feel awkwardly against the Warriors in New Zealand and scans confirmed the worse with the forward ruled out for the season.

Following the trip back to Brisbane, reports have emerged he developed the blood clot in his calf before it moved to his lungs.

The setback will reportedly push back Gilbert’s ACL surgery by three months, hurting his rehabilitation.

Speaking after the Dolphins loss to the Cowboys, Bennett confirmed his star forward did suffer a blood clot but wouldn’t divulge how long that will push back his operation.

“All I can tell you is what we know,” he said at the press conference.

“What we know is there’s no definite conclusion of when the operation is going to be.

“He did have a blood clot, that’s been resolved but it’s an ongoing examination with the doctors. We don’t have a definitive answer of what’s going to happen or when it’s going to happen, and we’re not going to speculate on that.”

Bennett added there’s been no rush to get Gilbert in for surgery, despite the nine-month recovery that comes with an ACL injury.

“He was never going to play this season anyway,” he said.

“No one was rushing around to get him an operation.”

Asked if Gilbert was alright, Bennett bluntly stated the blood clot was “no more serious than the day he injured his leg”.

“He’s OK. He’s here today, he’s fine,” he said.
