Benue State Justice Commissioner Urges Journalists to Combat Fake News
MAKURDI, Benue State — Prof. Timothy Ornguga, the Commissioner for Justice in Benue State, has called on journalists to refrain from disseminating false information and to resist political manipulation through financial incentives.
During a discussion with journalists on Friday, Ornguga expressed concern over the prevalence of misinformation, particularly targeting the government and its officials. He highlighted the troubling trend of distorting court rulings and spreading unfounded narratives.
“The propagation of fake news by social media practitioners is unacceptable,” he stated. “It is the duty of professional journalists to counter misinformation and provide the public with accurate information.”
Ornguga emphasized the importance of verifying information by consulting with relevant ministries and agencies prior to publication. “Truthful reporting is essential for public enlightenment,” he noted.
The Commissioner also acknowledged the vital role of journalists in the state, reinforcing that the Ministry of Justice is committed to ensuring equitable access to justice for all residents of Benue, regardless of their political affiliations, religious beliefs, or economic status.
