Blackout hits five northern Nigerian states, Niger Republic

Transmission Company of Nigeria Announces Scheduled Blackout Affecting Five States
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced a scheduled blackout impacting five northern states and parts of the Niger Republic. The outage is set to occur on Sunday, May 31, 2026, due to annual maintenance on the Mando–Kumbotso 330kV Transmission Line.
In a statement released on Saturday, TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah indicated that the maintenance work is necessary to repair a damaged Red Phase Conductor on Tower T187 along the transmission line.
As a result, the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) will be unable to supply electricity to several regions, including Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Bauchi, and Yobe states. Additionally, customers in Gazaoua, located in the Niger Republic, will also experience outages during this period.
While TCN expects the maintenance to take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the exact timing for the restoration of power to the affected areas has not been specified.
