Explosions at Military Facility in Bolivia Kill at Least 10, Search for Missing Continues
Viacha, Bolivia – Authorities confirmed that two explosions at a military facility in Viacha on Friday resulted in the deaths of at least 10 individuals, with at least 62 more sustaining injuries. The blasts occurred at a site approximately 30 kilometers (18 miles) from La Paz, where pyrotechnic materials were reportedly stored, according to Bolivia’s Ministry of Defence.
Rita Nebraska, health director for the city of Viacha, stated that estimates suggest the death toll may rise, as between 10 and 15 people are believed to have perished. Fourteen of the injured have been transported to hospitals in La Paz, including one girl suffering from third-degree burns.
Police spokesman Roger Roca reported that seven individuals remain missing, while efforts are underway to investigate the cause of the explosions. Residents in the vicinity have been advised to maintain a safe distance of at least 150 meters due to ongoing hazards, including the presence of a heat source at the site.
Damage was reported to numerous nearby homes, with many civilians affected by shattered glass in the aftermath of the explosions. Deputy Minister of Defence Ernesto Justiniano Urenda noted that nearly 50 civilians and six military personnel received treatment at local medical facilities.
An investigation is ongoing to ascertain both the circumstances surrounding the explosions and the conditions under which the pyrotechnic material was stored. Video footage shared on social media depicted one of the explosions causing significant disruption, shattering windows and sending debris aloft, as thick black smoke emanated from the facility.
