BREAKING: Tinubu approves N70,000 monthly transport allowance for Nigerian public workers as NLC deadline elapses

President Approves Transport Support for Public Service Workers Amid NLC Deadline
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has authorized a monthly transportation support payment of 70,000 naira for public service employees across all levels. This decision comes as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) approaches the conclusion of a four-day deadline, which expires on Tuesday, October 27, for the government to address rising fuel prices and minimum wage concerns.
The decision was finalized following a meeting on Tuesday between Labor and Employment Minister Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi and NLC leaders, including President Joe Ajaero. The federal government announced that the transport support initiative will take effect on November 5, 2026, and will be available for a duration of six months to help alleviate the financial burden associated with increasing living costs.
“The transport intervention of 70,000 naira will be disbursed across all levels for a period of six months, beginning in November 2026,” the government stated.
In addition to the transport support, the federal government has agreed to pay outstanding arrears of the peculiar allowance, starting from May 1, 2026. This payment will be disbursed in three equal installments, with the first payment scheduled for November 2026.
Furthermore, the federal government and the NLC have committed to forming a negotiation committee that will convene immediately to establish a timeline for implementing a new national minimum wage.
This development follows the NLC’s recent ultimatum, demanding the federal government take action to lower fuel prices and review the proposed 70,000-naira monthly minimum wage.
