BREAKING: Total electricity blackout hits Rivers, two other Nigerian states

Blackout Hits Rivers, Bayelsa, and Imo States Due to Transmission Line Outage

RIVERS STATE, Nigeria — Residents of Rivers, Bayelsa, and Imo states are experiencing a total blackout following a forced outage announced by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). The outage affected the Alaoji 132-kilovolt transmission line and occurred at approximately 3:39 a.m. on Tuesday.

In a statement, TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah identified an earth fault and distance protection failure as the causes of the outage. As a result, the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) is unable to distribute electricity to customers in Owerri, Yenagoa, and Ahoada, affecting thousands in the region.

“The Transmission Company of Nigeria wishes to inform the public that there was a forced outage on the Alaoji 132kV Transmission Line due to an earth fault and distance protection failure,” the statement said.

Mbah noted that TCN’s maintenance crew has been deployed to address the situation. “Our team is currently working on the line to ensure that normal bulk power supply is restored as quickly as possible,” she added.

TCN expressed regret over the inconvenience caused by the outage and offered apologies to affected customers. There is currently no set timeline for restoration of power as crews continue their work.
