Josh2Funny Weighs in on ‘Brain-Rot’ Content Creators Debate in Nigeria

Nigerian comedian Josh Alfred, widely known as Josh2Funny, recently addressed the emergence of what some have termed ‘brain-rot’ content creators and illiterate or semi-illiterate social media influencers in Nigeria.

This discussion was ignited after rapper YCee referred to this trend as the “Olodo Uprising,” a comment that has prompted mixed reactions across social media platforms.

In a recent interview with media personality Nedu Wazobia, Josh2Funny described the Olodo Uprising as both a blessing and a curse. He suggested that critics of these content creators were overly harsh, emphasizing that comedy does not have to be intellectually sophisticated.

Reflecting on his own beginnings in skit-making, he highlighted his character, ‘Mama Felicia,’ which he admitted was not based on intelligent humor. “When I started, it was easy for people to call me part of the Olodo Uprising. My character didn’t make any sense. It wasn’t well-articulated comedy; I was just fooling around,” he stated.

Josh2Funny affirmed YCee’s observation about the growth of these content creators, asserting that while some may view them as lacking intelligence, they have contributed significantly to Nigeria’s entertainment industry, specifically Nollywood.

“The so-called elite might call it ‘stupid,’ but it built a million-dollar industry,” he remarked. He also pointed out that social media has amplified the visibility of these creators, leading to increased scrutiny and criticism from trolls.

Additionally, he noted that people often target individuals like content creator Peller out of envy, particularly for achieving success without formal education. Concluding his thoughts, Josh2Funny questioned what society would prefer for those lacking formal qualifications: “Should he become a thief because he doesn’t know how to speak good English?”
