Continuous ASUU strike in Ondo varsities shameful, unacceptable – NANS
National Association of Nigerian Students Calls for Protests Over University Shutdowns
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has condemned the closure of state-owned universities in Ondo, calling it a situation that is no longer tolerable.
In a statement issued over the weekend, NANS emphasized the urgency of holding protests, designating this movement as the “mother of all protests.” The organization granted clearance to its Joint Campus Committees (JCC) in Ondo, Niger, Nasarawa, and other states currently affected by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike to initiate mobilization efforts.
Afeez Akinteye, the National President of NANS, announced that students from all states impacted by the strike would gather for coordinated protests. The ASUU’s strike, ongoing for the past two months at institutions such as Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, University of Medical Sciences, and Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, was initiated due to non-payment of salaries and the government’s failure to implement the FG-ASUU 2025 agreement.
Akinteye specified that NANS leadership would relocate to university campuses across the country starting next week to facilitate the planned demonstrations. He made the announcement following his participation in NANS events in Ghana, including leadership training workshops.
“The prolonged ASUU strike is unacceptable. Nigerian students have endured sufficient hardship as their academic progress has been severely disrupted,” Akinteye stated. “We demand immediate action and a sustainable resolution to ensure that our time and futures are respected.”
